OpenD/I Hackathon

When a handful of large corporations control 90% of the world’s data and IT infrastructures, the goal of this hackathon is to educate and inspire developers toward an alternative design — decentralized infrastructures as opposed to centralized proprietary systems.

By building large-scale public and open data lakes by design, which have no single authority that can alter its data, control how information is distributed, or decide who sees what and when, we can profoundly impact innovation and the democratization of information. Imagine a world where anyone can access parts of the Deep Web. The surface web, to which everyone has access, represents only a 4% area of the internet that users can explore. The internet is vast, and the Deep Web is a part of the World Wide Web whose contents are not indexed by standard web search engines for various reasons. These are usually extensive databases and metadata protected by corporations and available only to selected stakeholders. By making a vast amount of financial, web3, weather, public health, and scientific research data and databases accessible to innovators, developers can accelerate new inventions and innovations across various industries. We believe that access to reliable, unedited information is a fundamental right and an essential aspect of a free and democratic society. Raising awareness, incentivizing developers, and creating a free market for their contributions toward building open IT infrastructures are the central themes of this hackathon. We also hope to identify significant bottlenecks, such as security and scalability, and, more importantly, improve the developer experience when building, using, and scaling open IT infrastructures.
